Ann is one of Australia's leading business executives with a career that spans Government, Banking and Cruise Tourism. She joined the Philanthropy Australia Council as a casual member in 2017 and is standing for formal election.
Ann is currently Chairman of Carnival Australia, the largest cruise ship operator in Australasia and a division of Carnival Corporation & Plc. After joining as Chief Executive Officer in 2007, she has transformed the industry and growth has been in double digits each year since. Beginning working life as a radiographer, Ann became First Assistant Secretary of the Office of the Status of Women in Canberra before moving to the banking sector initially in HR roles, then in CEO roles with Westpac NZ and the Bank of Melbourne. Ann also currently holds non-executive roles with National Australia Bank, Sydney Airport, Palladium Group, Rugby Australia, Cape York Partnerships, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Infrastructure Victoria and Committee for Sydney and she is the Chair of UNICEF Australia.
The Australian Government awarded Ann the Centenary Medal in 2001 and in 2004 she was awarded an Order of Australia. In 2015, Ann was named as the overall winner of the Australian Financial Review 100 Women of Influence Award.
Ann devotes considerable energy to her passion for women’s rights, currently convening the MCC STEM group, opportunities for Indigenous communities, philanthropy and to the arts. Her family is active in philanthropy through the family PAF and she is keen to engage with members, build momentum in Sydney and support the successful delivery of PA’s strategy and business model.
Allan English wishes to stand for re-election to the Philanthropy Australia (PA) Council, having joined the Council in 2015.
Vision for Philanthropy Australia
Allan has always believed passionately in the power of philanthropy and this has been a driver for him both personally and professionally. He has had great personal clarity in his vision as an entrepreneur in that philanthropy has been his silent partner. He is keen to further share the experience and learnings he has developed over the past few decades through his business, philanthropy and Board roles and he believes that these would add considerable strength and diversification to the collective voices around the PA Council table.
Allan and his family continue to develop the English Family Foundation with their new strategy of focusing on the growth and development of social enterprise, and after extensive market consultation they are providing funding and strategy into the very early growth stage which is typically too risky for many to play in. Whilst this is providing a sound base for their external family values and philanthropy, Allan has also continued to grow the journey with his equally passionate management team and staff at Silver Chef and he is extremely proud that during 2015 they qualified the company as a certified B Corp, becoming one of only a small number in Australia and an even smaller handful of ASX listed companies. These recent developments have crystalised many of the learnings Allan has extracted during his journey and they provide a rich base from which to contribute to the Council.
It is Allan’s belief that PA is at a crucial and exciting junction in their growth strategy and he would like to continue to help develop and guide the organisation through this exciting phase. It is clear that philanthropy in Australia is growing and the writing on the wall means it must (and is trying to) develop a more professional and outcomes based focus. Both individuals and companies are seeking opportunities to get smarter about how they support the creation of social impact. There appears to be a real hunger now for guidance and a developing appetite to think outside the box and explore this in a way that hasn’t been the norm in Australia before. Allan feels strongly that we need to apply our entrepreneurial skills as well as exercising our “compassionate muscle” to truly create progress. Impact investment is also an area where he has had experience and the family foundation will continue to lead in taking advantage of early opportunities.
Whilst being a member based and driven organisation, Allan feels strongly feel PA must be continuously focused on the needs of the Australian social sector, a sector which in many ways is hemorrhaging and undergoing a self-directed evolution. He believes that the recent developments within PA’s strategy and approach to engaging with and supporting the sector are very powerful and are showing much early promise.
He has been very impressed by the strength of collaboration which has developed amongst members. The opportunity to explore game changing techniques and strategies first hand has greatly assisted Allan and his family to expand their thinking within the family foundation. It also clearly demonstrated to him the value proposition of PA and helped him to understand more deeply how it seeks to live out its goals to lead, grow and strengthen the sector.
Allan is the Founder and Executive Chairman of ASX-listed, and B-Corp accredited, Silver Chef Limited which was founded in 1986. In 2000, as a volunteer, he established the Queensland office for Opportunity International. In 2010, he created the English Family Foundation to support local and overseas social entrepreneurs tackling some of the more challenging issues facing our society. Allan currently serves as a Council member of Philanthropy Australia and on the Advisory Board for QUT's The Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies. He is a former recipient of the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year award and was recognised in 2012 by Queensland’s Community Foundation as Philanthropist of the Year. In 2014, he won the inaugural Philanthropy Australia’s Philanthropy Leader award.
In 2006 I co-founded the W & A Johnson Family Foundation (PAF) to provide a structure and focus for our family giving. I am an active member, participating in a number of Philanthropy Australia affinity group meetings, seminars and workshops. I am as passionate about the philanthropic sector in Australia generally as I am about my family’s own giving.
As a Council member, I am committed through our own PAF to PA’s new direction. I joined Council in 2012 and have served as Vice-President since 2015 and am a member of the Governance and Nominations sub-committee. In my 11 years of membership, I have watched Philanthropy Australia grow and better understand the enormously varied needs of its members. I have expressed opinion - and frustration at times - over issues that I felt PA was not addressing properly but am extremely pleased and proud of the progress made. I am committed to the current strategic plan and approach and very keen to see it delivered successfully.
There are enormous challenges but I now see an organisation that can spearhead philanthropic growth in this country, can represent all grantmakers - as different as they are - can assist grantseekers and can communicate effectively with all its stakeholders, including government and the general public. I want to be a member of Council, to be part of the implementation of the Strategic Plan and the future planning. I would like to see philanthropy become part of the general discourse of life in Australia.
I am Chair of the Sydney Theatre Company Foundation and Deputy Chair of the Sydney Theatre Company. I graduated from Arts/ Law (UNSW) in 1985 and worked as a solicitor briefly in Sydney then Tokyo. I am also a graduate of AICD. As a volunteer I have worked for periods at the Arts Law Centre in Sydney and Lou’s Place in Sydney. I am based in NSW and am a full member of PA through our family PAF.
I am the Co-founder and Managing Partner of Gilbert + Tobin, an independent corporate law firm. We have been members of Philanthropy Australia since 2015 and have worked closely with them on a number of activities, including the non-profit workshop series.
Prior to the establishment of Gilbert + Tobin I was a partner and deputy managing partner in the firm now known as Norton Rose Fulbright. I left that firm in 1985 to establish myself in private practice. In January 1998 I founded Gilbert + Tobin with my partner Tony Tobin. I have been the firm’s leader and managing partner since then. In 1988 we were two partners with two secretaries. Today 30 years later, we are 73 partners, 373 lawyers with an overall staff of 665 people. We have offices in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
My governance experience is reasonably extensive from the not-for-profit sector to a major Australian bank.
I am actively involved with the Business Council of Australia (BCA) working on 2 Committees. I chaired the Ease of Doing Business Committee prior to its incorporation into the Economic Policy and Competitiveness Committee. I also chaired the committee responsible for the BCA’s submissions and work on the Harper Review of Competition Law and Policy. I am currently on the BCA’s Governance & Citizenship Committee and the Economic Policy and Competitiveness Committee. From time to time I am asked to Chair or be a member of organisations or groups established by government to examine issues of the day.
Current governance roles include Co-Chair Cape York Partnership Pty Ltd and Chair University of Western Sydney Foundation. Former roles include Director National Australia Bank Limited, Chair National Museum of Australia and Director Bangarra Dance Theatre. I have also chaired the Law and Justice Foundation of NSW, the Public Interest Advocacy Centre Ltd and the Public Interest Law Cleaning House Inc.
I have a broad understanding of Australian Society and am well known in legal, corporate and business circles, in the not-for-profit community sector and at all levels of government. As a board member I am highly collaborative with a demonstrated ability to focus on what is key and to manage the sometimes tricky divide between board and management.
It has been my good fortune to have been involved with the governance of not for profit organisations since 1971, being a Non-Executive Director of some twenty such organisations including chairing statutory public corporations such as the Sydney Opera House Trust, and SBS.
Currently I am on the global board of Human Rights Watch and The Conversation Media Group, and The Observership program.
I have had at the same time a business career in funds management and private investment, with Board experience in Australia, Asia and the United States.
Over the last 20 years, I have had an increasing involvement with the sector through philanthropy which has grown from individual giving into a more formalised structure through our family Sky Foundation PAF.
As Chairman of the Sky Foundation, I have been involved in its program both on the “business investment side” which has included social impact bonds as well as the social investment side which ranges across arts, medical research, indigenous, international aid, human rights (especially women’s rights), and the performing arts sectors.
I am very much interested in bringing this experience in assisting Philanthropy Australia as the peak organisation for the philanthropic sector to further develop its policies and programs to enhance the scale and effectiveness of the sector. As Chairman of PA’s Policy & Research Committee, I have been particularly interested in promoting the role of philanthropy in society, the need for active advocacy on social and environmental issues, and the development of innovative and effective social entrepreneurship.
Joe joined the Philanthropy Australia Council in 2015 and since 2016 has also been the Chair of PA’s Policy and Research sub-committee.
